What is Ballet??

Ballet is a form of dancing performed for theatre audiences. Like other dance forms, ballet may tell a story, express a mood, or simply reflect the music. But a ballet dancer's technique (way of performing) and special skills differ greatly from those of other dancers. Ballet dancers perform many movements that are unnatural for the body. But when these movements are well executed, they look natural.

Ballet dancers seem to ignore the law of gravity as they float through the air in long, slow leaps. They keep perfect balance while they spin like tops without becoming dizzy. During certain steps, their feet move so rapidly that the eye can hardly follow the movements. The women often dance on the tips of their toes, and the men lift them high overhead as if they were as light as feathers.

The dancers take joy in controlling their bodies, and ballet audiences share their feelings. The spectators can feel as though they are gliding and spinning with the dancers. Simply by using their bodies, ballet dancers are able to express many emotions, such as anger, fear, jealousy, joy, and sadness. The lines of the dancers' bodies form beautiful, harmonious designs. Ballet technique is called classical because it stresses this purity and harmony of design.

  5. I believe Ballet takes up a great deal of your life but its not a way of life. Ballet is a passion. You have to put hours and hours into classes everyday its painful work. You have to make your efforts look seamless and easy thoughout every step, when in actuality you can barley breathe and fell like eveyone saw that little slip up you just made. Many people beileive dancing is easy but if they have ever even taken a class they would realize that being thrown right into a company class and look like a retard then they might understand. When you dance its not only about looking beatiful and flowing in a story ballet but to protray the emotions your charater feels!!! if its a sad senece I know of many a dancer that starts to cry on stage they get so into there charater! But then you get throw into a modern ballet and every movent has to be sharp when the audince sees you move it has to be like you hit a brick wall and stopped for that half a second then kept moving. Ballet is not a WAY of life Ballet is your life.

  9. i am a dancer myself and i feel that this blog would inspire young dancers to become a professional like myself. I hope the best wishes for this blog and I hope that many people join dance/ballet. It's something that comes from the soul. If you have a passion you will go far. I hope many dancers will achieve greatness and I know it's hard to achieve. :)

  10. I have danced in ballet since I was 3 years old, and still do to this day at 22. I love dancing with all my heart and soul. Its the beauty of pulling off that triple that you have been working on for months perfectly, performing that floor combination flawlessly after getting at least half a dozen blisters in pointe from practicing, everything about ballet is devotion, passion, courage, dilligence, hard work and love. No matter where I am, how I feel or whats going on, dance is always in my heart and soul :)
